Mention of the Serengeti great migration brings images of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest hurtling themselves into gushing rivers as hungry crocodiles lie in wait for their annual feast. It’s dramatic, it’s reckless and it’s nature in all it’s wild glory. Yet this is just one season in an annual cycle of life, where countless masses of wildebeest and zebra migrate across the Serengeti and into the Masai Mara in Kenya, in search of water and grazing. Calving season is just as incredible, with tens of thousands of calves being born within a two week period, as masses of predators prowl the plains.
May, being the green season, lends itself to amazing photographic opportunities with dramatic skies and far less tourists. It offers great value for money, and excellent game viewing as thousands of zebra and wildebeest calves, which should be two to three months old now, are up on their feet and on the move north. The area west of Seronera and around Moru Kopjes is alive with activity, as massive herds funnel their way in huge columns of up to 40 km in length.
