In the “good old days” when we first started Wild Frontiers in 1991, we had an open book to play with, as regards pioneering areas. Who would have thought that we would be amongst the first people to run trips into Chad, Congo – both of them, Libya, Gabon, Sao Tome and Principe, paraglide off Kilimanjaro, fish in the Nile in Uganda … the list is long. These lead to us opening up businesses in Tanzania and Uganda, so we now have camps, lodges, boats, staff, vehicles etc – and over 200 people in the family now.
Long before cameras in phones, social media etc. We have found some archival VHS that we will be sharing with anyone interested – sometimes the quality is a bit dodgy, but that’s what it was like “back then”.
For instance let us take you back to an installment we did in 1998 with Getaway Magazine @getawaymagazine featuring the Kilimanjaro Machame Route.
It’s incredible how things have changed – the ice and snow on the mountain has reduced substantially, the equipment we use now is a lot better, no fires are allowed on the mountain either, it’s still one of the most intense experiences one can have, a physical and mental challenge of note. Interesting that we are still working with the same people we were back in the 1990’s, a great team, almost family…
