The thatched central lounge and dining area provide a comfortable setting for meals and relaxation, although we often serve meals ‘al fresco’ next to the river. In the evening, the outdoor fireplace is the perfect place for guests to relax with sundowners and share their day’s experiences.

Being within the park the wildlife is free to also pass through the camp and elephants can be seen bathing in the river, buffalo enjoy grazing and resident troops of Black-and-White Colobus and vervet monkeys are frequently viewed. If you are lucky, George, the lone hippo, can also be seen beside the camp. Our attentive security staff are always on hand to escort and assist you should you feel the wildlife is too close! Bush breakfasts and sundowners within the park complete the ‘bush’ experience offered at Ishasha Wilderness Camp.

Ishasha Wilderness Camp offers quality accommodation in the unspoilt, remote southern sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, famous for its tree climbing lions. It’s an idyllic retreat for people who truly enjoy the wilderness. The camp is next to the Ntungwe River, nestled under shady trees.

Each of the ten spacious canvas rooms is comfortably furnished and boasts a large verandah. The en suite bathroom and dressing area have running water for hand-basins and hot ‘bush’ showers, plus a flushing ‘eco-friendly’ toilet.

A central lounge and dining area, under a cool thatched roof, provides a comfortable environment for meals and to relax in during the heat of the day. Under the trees, next to the river, we often serve meals ‘al fresco’ and there is an evening ‘fireplace’ for guests to relax with sundowners and share their day’s experience.
As the camp is within the National Park, we have designed it to be as low impact as possible with low usage of water, power and other resources. Solar power is used for lighting with power points limited to a central area allocated for recharging cameras and videos.
Meals are freshly prepared with many local ingredients, and our bar has a selection of local and imported beverages. Early morning wake up calls to your tent with tea/coffee allows you to savour the early morning sounds of the ‘bush’ awakening.
We recommend a stay of between two to four nights in the camp as there is a lot to see in the area. One of the highlights is the possible viewing of the lions of this area, often found resting in the branches of large fig trees.

Ishasha and Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National park spreads over an area of 1978 km2 in the western arm of the Great East Rift Valley. It is a home to a variety of wildlife including elephant, lion, hippo, leopard, buffalo, and Uganda kob, baboon, and birds, all typical of riverine and savannah habitats. In the southern part of the park is the Ishasha sector, where we commonly see tree-climbing lions and we find the Maramagambo, one of the largest surviving natural forests in Uganda. Its location, midway between the Mweya area of QENP and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, makes it a natural place to spend a few nights on a long itinerary.

  • Hot air balloon rides
  • Explore the camp on foot in search of the Narina Trogon and Black Bee eaters, two of the camp’s rarer bird species
  • Savour Ishasha’s vast vistas and the atmosphere of this beautiful area of the park with a bush breakfast or late afternoon sundowner besides the Ntungwe River or along the ridge
  • Guided walks along the Ishasha River for close-up viewing of hippos can be arranged with National Park staff
  • We are proud to support the Ishasha Community Uplift Project which was voted Best Community Tourism Initiative 2015 for developing Deo’s Homestead Tour and Agartha’s ‘Taste of Uganda’ Tour, a short drive from the camp. Meet the people of Ishasha and see how the farming community lives beside the National Park

Community Projects

Ishasha Community Project has been set up by Wild Frontiers and we are committed to conserving the bio-diversity of the area by reducing threats to the eco-system through increased economic opportunities. Locally made handi-crafts are available for purchase, and village walks are offered to guests to interact with the communities of the area and view the UCF “elephant trench” designed to reduce crop raiding in the agricultural areas on the fringes of the National Park. More information on UCF and their projects can be found on

When to Go

Game and bird life is prolific all year round, but bird-watching is good during the summer months (Oct—Nov) for migratory species as well as
endemics. This area of Uganda has a temperate climate all year round, 25–30˚C during the day and 8–12˚C at night.
