We first visited Zaire in 1990 – an epic trip, up Lake Tanganyika on top of a ship, gorillas, and the Okapi at Epulu. The aim was Garamba National Park – we failed, the roads were impassable, but we got there the next year via Uganda. In 1990, tourism in Uganda was but a green shoot in a burnt plain, but it showed us the potential and was the reason we started our Uganda operation in 1995.
In 1994, we did a trip with the late Patrick Wagner, from Getaway Magazine, how things have changed and yet stayed the same. Of interest, in the same article, is mention of the start of the Uganda gorilla trekking, in 1993.
We are lucky to have seen, and been part of, the birth of this industry, and next year, we are going back to Zaire – combined with our Uganda Camps & Lodges , it’s a great mix …watch the press for details.
