Over the 30-plus years we’ve been travelling to and selling Africa, we’ve come to know East & Central Africa (Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and DRC) exceptionally well. It’s a region well suited to those looking for iconic game viewing and active travel.
Join us on our journey showcasing ten things (in no particular order of course!) we think you just HAVE to try for yourself:
Whether its thunderous herds hurling themselves across the Mara River, or the majestic miracle of the calving season down in southern Serengeti, the annual wildebeest migration offers great game viewing (and predator action) no matter which time of the year you choose to travel.
Coming mere meters away from a giant Silverback in his natural environment is not an experience words can easily capture. Trekking endangered Mountain gorillas in Uganda, Rwanda or the DRC is one of our personal favourite activities. Chimpanzee trekking in places like Kibale (Uganda, the primate capital of the world), or Gombe Stream National Park(Tanzania), famous for Dr. Jane Goodalls work among chimps – also makes it to our ‘must dos’ list.
3. CLIMBING KILIMANJARO
With over 10 000 Wild Frontiers travellers having successfully summited the world’s (not just Africa’s!) highest free-standing mountain, we are well positioned to offer advice on which route is best suited to each climber.
4. NGORONGORO CRATER
A true marvel of nature, and a UNESCO World Heritage site, your chances of seeing 4 of the Big5 here are pretty good. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the crater – whose other claim to fame (aside from being home to over 25 000 animals) is as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.
5. WALKING SAFARIS
Safari with a sense of space and freedom that really brings the word ‘wild’ to life. Whether you prefer to head out for a day, or sleep under the stars on a multi-day hike, a walking safari offers an up close and personal encounter with the African bush.
6. HORSEBACK SAFARIS
Kenya is the ‘birth place’ of African horse-back safaris, and offers unrivalled riding across game-rich landscapes. So saddle up and experience the rush of the wind on your face as you explore pristine wilderness areas.
7. BUSH & BEACH BREAK
From African sunsets over vast plains, to sparking white beaches and tropical waters. Combining both bush and beach feels like the perfect escape in our travel book!
8. BALLOONING
Nothing much beats a birds’-eye view of massive herds moving across the plains. We fly at dawn, floating gently above endless wilderness in search of elephant, wildebeest, buffalo and more – before enjoying a memorable bush breakfast. What better way to celebrate a special occasion?
Whether it’s the rush of climbing the active Mount Nyiragongo in DRC, or the challenge of summiting Ol Doinyo Lengai (meaning ‘Mountain of God” in the local Maasai language) in Tanzania, climbing a volcano is not for the faint-hearted. But the view from the top is worth it!
10. FISHING FOR NILE PERCH
Since we launched our first boat in Uganda, we have hosted many anglers from all over the world including Jeremy Wade (River Monsters presenter). Up at Murchison Falls, Nile perch of up to 113 kg have been recorded, the largest fresh water game fish in Africa.
