If you’re looking to hit your fitness goals but want to break free from the same old routine, then combine your fitness goals with your love of travel. If you’ve conquered the treadmill, Mt Kilimanjaro may be the perfect next challenge to set yourself. Here’s a list of reason why you should climb Kili.

5 REASONS TO CLIMB

1.      Push your limits – both physically and mentally.
2.      Conquer the highest peak in Africa – and one of the Seven Summits.
3.      Anyone of reasonable fitness can do it – it’s not a technical climb.
4.      The view from the top is spectacular.
5.      It’s a natural wonder – a snow covered mountain set on the equator.

5 TIPS TO TAKE YOU TO THE TOP

1.      Train at high altitude with the boots you intend to climb in and a fully loaded backpack. You’ll be walking 6-8 hours a day, for 6 or so days in a row, so good prep is essential.
2.      Go ‘pole pole’ (slowly, slowly) – the art is in acclimatizing.
3.      Drink plenty. Staying hydrated is critical.
4.      Make friends on the mountain, they will motivate you to keep going when you feel like giving up.
5.      Listen to your guide. They have done this countless times.

5 ROUTES TO GET YOU THERE

1.      Machame: great for novice hikers, a beautiful route and one of the most popular climbs.
2.      Rongai: quiet route, making it uncrowded and perfect for less experienced climbers.
3.      Marangu: Following the same path up and down, and sleeping in communal huts, this is an easier climb.
4.      Umbwe: Considered the most scenic route.
5.      Lemosho: Remote and wild, for the first two days you may well be the only climbers on this section.
