For many years Africa’s earliest adventurers searched for the source of the Nile River. Many tried and failed until John Hanning Speke discovered the Ripon Falls on the northern shore of Lake Victoria. Many years later, the area has been irreversibly altered by the installation of Owen Falls Dam to regulate water flow out of the lake. But what has happened to the closest town, Jinja, is even more remarkable. Come explore Jinja, the adventure capital of east Africa.
Located on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, Jinja is the third largest economy in the east African community (comprised of 6 of the African Great Lake Region countries) and has a population of roughly 90,000. But why should you add this area to your Uganda safari?
Take a Leap of Faith
For adrenaline junkies there’s nothing quite like Jinja. Famed for its bungee jump (especially night time and full moon bungee jumps) over the White Nile (45 m or 147 feet high), the area has become a one stop adventure hot spot. Add the beautiful scenery while plunging to just metres above the world’s longest river and we’re sure you’ll be itching to come back. And if you don’t believe us then take Prince William’s word for it. He did a tandem jump back in 2003.
It’s ‘Rapidly’ Becoming The Place to Visit
Why not take your adventure closer to the water with some of the best white water rafting in the world? Jinja offers 3 or 5 grade white water rafting down the Nile so anyone can take part. Drastic drops, vertical boats and the crashing sound of huge white water rapids await you on this fantastic adventure. Just try to hold on!
For those who aren’t content with going down on an 8 man raft there are kayaking, jet boating and boogie boarding/surfing options.
Out of the Water
In the area surrounding Jinja there is a plethora of activities to keep you interested and help you explore. From mountain biking, horseback riding and quad biking to exploring the nearby forests on a zipline, this area has something for just about anyone. Then relax with a quick trip to the Nile Brewery before boarding a Nile River sunset cruise or getting onto one of the many houseboats on the lake to end your day in comfort. Just another day in Africa…
