Capturing photographs of Africa, its landscapes and the inhabitants has always been an integral part of an African Safari. Photographic equipment is getting more capable and affordable, as such visitors to the continent today are more prepared for photographic opportunities. However the fundamentals of photography are enduring, understanding light, composition and achieving correct exposures will always remain key elements in photography. Wildlife photography is also about understanding animals and the interactions with each other and their environment, a type of "ecological photography".
Our groups are small and intimate which is the ideal situation for sharing of knowledge amongst the group and being able to get your answers from the guides in a way that is understandable and relates to the real time situations. Our main focus on our safaris is to get you, the wildlife enthusiast and photographer into the best possible situation to view unique behaviour, as such our guides are first and foremost nature guides (ecological guides) with a passion for photography.
Wild Frontiers has created a photographic safari division that will cater for all photographers, from those people that rip the wrapping of their first camera as they board the plane, to those experienced hands that have worn through the grips of more than one tripod. Our safaris are designed to put similarly skilled photographers together, led by experienced safari guides that have, over the years, built up an incredible knowledge of Africa's wild areas and how to capture the beauty and the inhabitants with a camera
About: Wild Frontiers Photographic Safari's
Having a clear passion and understanding of photography will always result in a personally rewarding image, but Africa beats to its own drum. If you have ever watched a wildlife documentary and been to Africa, you'll always wonder how they manage to fit so much action into a 2-hour show. What is left out is the 2 years of waiting and watching to capture that 2 hours of rare footage. Viewing animals going about their day to day lives, is what most people witness on their safari, to photograph unique behaviour you need to be in the right place at the right time, which is about your guide anticipating animal behaviour, than your photographic equipment.
This is the clear distinction of our Photographic Safaris, all our guides are accomplished photographers - but first and foremost they are GUIDES, and completely tuned-in with Africa's natural systems having spent many years watching and observing the behaviour and social interactions of animals that are today your photographic subjects. This enables them to anticipate behaviour to best prepare you for your ideal photograph. As photographers themselves, they will ensure you are set up for the best possible angle, lighting, and view of the photographic subject and they are always on hand to explain any questions about the more technical side of photography.
Etienne Oosthuizen (Photographic Africa)
Etienne is a professional guide with an invaluable enthusiasm for wildlife photography. A born and bred Zimbabwean and having grown up on a tobacco farm, He was exposed to the great outdoors from a young age, with canoeing trips down the Zambezi during his school holidays. Now with more than 10 years experience in 5 countries and with many hours spent behind a camera, he now leads our photographic safaris to the wild places in Africa.
After seeing how photographic safaris have been conducted throughout Africa, there was a need to get back to grassroots and review how these were operated. Understanding that Africa needs to be interpreted by a local Photographer to visiting photographers, you need a guide that both understand Africa and Photography. Etienne does not join your safaris to beef up his own portfolios, what he offers is a insightful view of our continent and how to help you, the photographer, capture Africa in her best light.
